Post by Peter HillPost by Dave OffilerHad a problem setting up the Technicolor TG582n free Demon router for
HTTP:80 port forwarding ('Game & Application Share') - error saying that
the port is in conflict with an already assigned game or application
even though there are no such shares (visible).
After a bit of Googling, it turns out that the router is, by default,
set up to forward port 80 to itself. Nice! The answer is to run through
the configure wizard in 'ADSL (Expert)' mode, fill in the Demon details
(again) and re-set/restart the router. The HTTP share can then be set to
the LAN server.

Pity the manuals (or Deon FAQ) don't give this advice...

I spent 3 hours 17:00-20:00 yesterday learning that setup required use
of the ADSL Expert Wizard and couldn't be done manually (at least not by
me). Changing what appeared to be the routers IP address manually
resulted in it having to be reset.
Claimed it was pre-configured. It wouldn't work on my network which uses
192.168.housenumber.xxx as the local network. Didn't work with my static
IP allocation 1-127 and DHCP allocation 128-192.
I still didn't manage get it to use 192.168.hn.1 as gateway so had to go
round everything (all 4 of them) setting the gateway to 254.
What are these other 2 wireless networks that it seems to be showing?
One says it is unsecure but I am not able to connect to it. There is a
plastic card in the pack with SSID of the other secure 2extra" network,
a security code and pin.
The good thing is, its connection is a bit faster (11%) than old router
even before the switch to ADSL2+. I think I might wind up around 8Mbps
with a 30% data download speed increase after the switch (28/4/13). I
expect to get the full up speed.
Old Belkin b/g router
Data Rate Down/Up 5600Kb/448Kb
TG528n 6.016 Mb / 448 Kb (actually says 448Mb)
Actual data speed is higher too. 4.85Mbps

Was (at best) 4.37Mbps

Demon support came through (after I'd solved the problem by a full
reconfig - see above) with the advice:
---
By default the routers are shipped with the http interfaces set so that
we at support can access them remotely. You can disable the firewall
rules by telnetting to the router on its local IP address and login with
admin as the username and DemonCPE[*] as the password and enter
:service system ifdelete name=HTTP group=wan
:service system ifdelete name=HTTPs group=wan
:saveall
---
[*] or whatever you may have reset it to.
While I could telnet in, these command didn't work (most likely because
I'd wiped all Demon's pre-config), but they may be useful to others.
If, like me, you've been playing around with settings, I suggest doing a
back-button reset - this seems to get back to Demon's (firmware?)
settings rather than the manufacturers' factory settings. Be aware that
the Demon default IP is 192.168.254.254, not 192.168.1.254 as it says on
the tin. Your LAN device for connecting obviously has to be on the same
sub-net.
I've suggested Demon put this info on their 'how-to' page, since the
instructions there - which just repeat the manual - clearly can't work
until the above has been done [surely a common requirement for Demon
customers?]
Anyway, all running & stable now, with connection 18Mb/s down & 1MB/s up
(not that actual file transfer is that, but I'm getting about 2.5x the
previous speeds).
