As of 11:50 today the server is down again. Turnpike is reporting Server
Busy.

This has be dragging on for at least 3 weeks now. What are demon doing.
I know it may be there providers but surely the problem could have been
isolated by now.

What is even more annoying is that not one have they admitted on the
status and traffic light display that they have a problem.

The Demon news server isn't down but it is producing some problems. I
am getting 502's and 480's every time I get new headers. Other servers
are working perfectly.

The 502 issue is long standing. The first post I can find about 502 is
from the day after the switch to Highwinds. Though that maybe due to
Demon allowing unlimited access - I used to collect all the news in
parallel, while Highwinds only allow a trickle feed of 3 connections
max. I've not had this problem since I set max connections to 2 + 1
priority and disconnect after 600 sec inactivity but the finger of
fate may just turn and point at me.

The server captures your connection and fails to drop it. When it's
collected 3 failed to disconnects it refuses the connection until it
time expires one or more of the captured conections. Every time it
sees you it seems to extend the time before it drops the captured
connection so banging on it makes it worse

Go on holiday so all the computers that Highwinds call a news server
can drop the invalid captured connection(s).

[1] though it's way better than what Demon called a working news
server for the last 3-5 years.

Did you not find that it was all OK a few minutes later? Looking back
through my logs, I see the odd blip that shouldn't occur of course, but
it only seems to last for a few minutes.

I gave up with Demon's news service (for what it was).... When they
started to P arround with it (Highwinds?)

I now use AIOE's news service. No worries at all. Free and relaible
access from anwhere I can get a 'net connection. And if not, a tunnel
home to a redirecting proxy fixes that!

Regards.
