Why isn't there a message-id on each mail generated by the webmail
system?

The test mails I mentioned on thread "pop3 mail broken" did eventually
reach the pop3 server and make themselves collectable, but my anti spam
software acted on a rule I've defined in it and deleted these mails
because they had no message-id header something that, until now, I've
only seen in spam. It did however log all the headers that were
present, so I know how those test mails made their way through demon's
system. [Very slowly.]

But I thought that the RFCs made Message-Id, if not absolutely
required, at least heavily recommended in emails. So what's going on?

I sent an email asking the same question to ***@demon.net and got
this answer:

There is no automatic emails generated by web mail, however there
is no such message-ID's that are generated when sent an emails from
web mail. I request you to check the web mail while sending emails
as there is no such options on the web mail. Please use an email
program in order to send emails with message ID's. I apologize for
the inconvenience.

Am I the only person who thinks that

a) this doesn't actually answer the question

b) is in very poor english?

How am I supposed to get a sensible answer?

a) Yes

b) The standard of education seems to have declined sharply in Finchly ;-)

I'm thinking of changing my bank, credit cards and backup software because
I'm fed up speaking to support people who know nothing about the product and
can only read from scripts.

The only reason I'm still with Demon after all these years is that when I
have problems I can speak to someone technically competent who knows the
systems, understands the issue and can do something to sort it out.
If I wanted to bash my head against the wall in frustration trying to
explain basics to support people who should know exactly what I'm talking
about, I could get that from any number of ISPs for a lot less than I'm
paying Demon.

You're right - RFC2822 has Message-Id as a "SHOULD have" field in a
message header. When it first went into service, WebMail did generate
message-ids.

Demon's WebMail software doesn't generate message-ids itself. Instead, it
leaves that up to the mail server it talks to to send those emails. The
mail server software in question is Exim, which, up until version 4.30,
would automatically add the message-id to any email sent through it, if
needed.

From 4.30 onwards, Exim will only generate a messge-id in certain
circumstances, and, unfortunately, in the default Exim configuration, the
way WebMail works isn't one of those circumstances.

The configuration has now been changed and WebMail is once again
generating message-ids.
